I am a bit wary of rules in photography. They can sometimes really get in the way of creative freedom and spontaneity. This photo goes against two rules:

1. the viewing direction is opposite to our writing direction;
2. there is (too) much 'negative space' in the image.

My advice to workshop participants is always: experiment and feel free to ignore the rules if you think they don't work in a specific case. Photography is a form of art. Art is free, spontaneous and creative. Although people thought differently in the old days, art is not bound by rules according to the contemporary view. Art must evoke a feeling. And that works better by giving spontaneity free rein.

This image is constructed from right to left, at least that's how it seems at first glance. We usually view a photo in the direction of writing, from left to right. Furthermore, there is a lot of empty (negative) space in the photo. So much negative space runs the risk of becoming 'dead' space. But by ignoring both rules, balance is created again. Minus times minus is plus. The actual subject, the large snowdrop, is indeed looking to the left, but because the negative space is on the left, the viewer's eye will go in the natural direction of view, from the empty field on the left towards the snowdrop. The little bell 'catches' the gaze, it looks at the viewer.

The moral of this story: dare to experiment, dare to go off the beaten track and ignore the rules if your feeling tells you to.

Ik ben wat huiverig voor regels in de fotografie. Ze kunnen de creatieve vriijheid en spontaniteit soms erg in de weg zitten. Deze foto gaat tegen twee regels in:

1. de kijkrichting is tegengesteld aan onze schrijfrichting;
2. er is (te)veel 'negatieve ruimte' in het beeld.

Mijn advies aan workshopdeelnemers is altijd: experimenteer en lap de regels gerust aan je laars, als je denkt dat ze in een specifiek geval niet werken. Fotografie is een vorm van kunst. Kunst is vrij, spontaan en creatief. Hoewel men daar in oude tijden anders over dacht, is kunst naar de hedendaagse opvatting niet aan regels gebonden. Kunst moet een gevoel oproepen. En dat lukt beter door spontaniteit vrij spel te geven.

Dit beeld is opgebouwd van rechts naar links, althans zo lijkt het op het eerste gezicht. Wij bekijken een foto doorgaans juist met de schrijfrichting mee, van links naar rechts. Verder is er wel erg veel lege (negatieve) ruimte in de foto. Zoveel negatieve ruimte loopt het risico 'dode' ruimte te worden. Maar door beide regels te negeren ontstaat er juist weer balans. Min maal min is plus. Het eigenlijke onderwerp, het grote sneeuwklokje, kijkt weliswaar naar links, maar doordat de negatieve ruimte links is, zal het oog van de kijker in de natuurlijke kijkrichting gaan, vanuit het lege veld links richting het sneeuwklokje. Het klokje 'vangt' de blik, op, het kijkt de kijker aan.

De moraal van dit verhaal: durf te experimenteren, durf van de gebaande paden af te gaan en negeer de regels als je gevoel dat aangeeft.
